The Social in Architecture | Kigali | Rwanda

Between the 6th and 9th of May 2022, the Institute for Spatial Resilience has organised a research workshop between junior researchers from TU Dresden and the University of Rwanda.Developed and coordinated by Dipl.-Ing Julia Krafft with the support of  Dr Josephine Malonza (University of Rwanda) the workshop; called SPACES OF INTERACTION – The Social in Architecture, was intended to record the daily routines of some inhabitants of the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
By merging anthropology and architecture; using a method called Architectural Ethnography, the young researchers have thoroughly observed various social situations while using the medium of drawing. This helped to properly understand and extract the relevance of space during these social interactions.

he city of Kigali is being developed at a very fast pace. This workshop was intended to understand examples of spaces and contexts offering possibilities of social interaction in order to use them as models for a more sustainable development.
At the end of the workshop, the participants enjoyed a well-deserved excursion for a couple of days through Kigali and the beautiful hilly countryside of Rwanda.
